Past President William N. Werner, MD, MPH 2009-2010

Past President William N. Werner, MD, MPH 2009-2010William N. Werner, MD, MPH, was inaugurated as the Chicago Medical Society’s 161st president during ceremonies at the CMS Annual Meeting held at Maggiano’s Banquets, Chicago.

Dr. Werner is Vice President of Clinical Transformation at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. He previously served as Vice President of Medical Management and Chief Medical Officer. He is also an Assistant Dean for the Chicago Medical School of Rosalind Franklin University. Dr. Werner has been a member of Illinois Masonic’s Medical Staff since 1986 and has been in active private practice since 1976 on Chicago’s near North Side. He previously was Associate Director of Medical Education at Henrotin Hospital and Medical Director of HCX, Inc., in Naperville.

Dr. Werner earned his bachelor’s degree from North Park College, Chicago, and both his medical and master’s of public health degrees from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Werner has been a member of the CMS Council since 1994, a Trustee since 2000, and has served as Secretary and as Treasurer.

He has been active on the following CMS committees: Budget (Chair), Building, Investment, PRO Study (Chair), Continuing Medical Education, Subcommittee on Fee Mediation, Third Party Payment Processes, Nominating, Continuing Medical Education, Technology (Chair), Budget (Chair), Nominating, and the Midwest Clinical Conference (Chair).  He was Course Director for the MCC Computers and Technology sessions for several years.

At the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS), Dr. Werner has served on the Committee on CME Activities and the Committee on CME Accreditation, as well as the Council on Economics. He is on the ISMS Board of Trustees.  At the national level, Dr. Werner is an Alternate Delegate to the AMA; he has been a member of the AMA’s CPT Advisory Committee and served on former Governor Ryan’s Task Force on Medical Errors and Patient Safety.  He is on the Board of Directors of the Washington Square Health Foundation, Inc., and serves as Chairman of the Grant Committee. He also serves on the Board of Directors for The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois.

Dr. Werner is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.  He is a member of the American Public Health Association and a fellow of the Institute of Medicine of Chicago. He was President of the Chicago Society of Internal Medicine in 2001-2002.

Dr. Werner is a longtime resident of Skokie, where he lives with his wife, Ruthanne; they have an adult son, Matthew.
