MORE THAN 44,000 people in Cook County had $112 million in medical debt erased this summer, thanks to a unique partnership being replicated across the country.
Loyola Medicine, Cook County’s Medical Debt Relief Initiative and “Undue Medical Debt,” a national nonprofit that has been working with local governments and hospitals to buy up large amounts of unpaid medical bills, said they have “reached an agreement that will result in the erasure of $112.12 million worth of non-Medicare/Medicaid medical debt for Loyola’s patients in 2024.”

When Undue Medical Debt buys unpaid bills, it cancels the debt altogether. Typically, hospitals that have thousands of unpaid medical bills owed by patients sell such debt, generally at a discount, to collection agencies and try to recoup the money.
