Mission Statement
In serving physicians of Cook County, the Chicago Medical Society:

Purpose
Founded in 1850, the Chicago Medical Society cultivates the science and art of medicine, promotes the sharing of professional experience, and encourages enthusiasm for the profession among its members.

Membership
Membership is comprised of nearly 7,000 professionals who reside in or practice in Cook County.  Representing all medical specialties, including practice managers, the Chicago Medical Society encourages all medical students, residents, physicians in active practice, academicians, retired physicians, and practice managers, to apply for membership.

Committees

Committee participation is open to the general membership and is encouraged.
Bylaws/Policy Review Committee
Purpose: To receive suggestions for changes in the Bylaws and to recommend amendments to the Council where appropriate; to keep the Chicago Medical Society Policy Manual up-to-date by reviewing actions taken by the Council and statements in the Policy Manual for appropriateness and timeliness.
Committee for Academic Physicians
Communications/Technology Committee
Purpose: To monitor the world of technology, inform and educate members on the use of computer and technology applications in the clinical setting and for personal use.
Continuing Medical Education Committee
Purpose: To ensure that the Chicago Medical Society adheres to and is in compliance with the Essentials and Standards for Commercial Support of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education; to initiate, implement and evaluate continuing medical education programs for the members of the Chicago Medical Society; and to cooperate with and assist related groups in structuring CME programs under joint sponsorships.
Council of Medical Staff Leadership
Purpose: To be responsible at Council Meetings for determining the number of voting members present, announcing a quorum and acting as tellers should the need arise and to function as outlined in the By-Laws, which provide that the committee shall have charge of all general elections.
Credentials/Election Committee
Purpose: To be responsible at Council Meetings for determining the number of voting members present, announcing a quorum and acting as tellers should the need arise and to function as outlined in the By-Laws, which provide that the committee shall have charge of all general elections.
Employed Physicians Committee
Purpose: To be responsible at Council Meetings for determining the number of voting members present, announcing a quorum and acting as tellers should the need arise and to function as outlined in the By-Laws, which provide that the committee shall have charge of all general elections.
Health Care Economics Committee
Purpose: To monitor local trends of managed care, health delivery service and quality; to advise the Society of significant trends, and review the actions of the professional liability insurance industry, to keep the medical society informed about health planning in Chicago and Suburban Cook County; and to evaluate the effects of physician reimbursement and medical policies proposed by the federal government (Medicare and Medicaid) and other third party payers.
Long Range Planning Committee
Purpose: To ensure that the Chicago Medical Society has a well-conceived 5-year strategic plan that includes an analysis of trends, strengths and weaknesses of Chicago Medical Society and the environment of medicine and to prescribe actions to position the Chicago Medical Society for the future. The plan will be updated annually.
Membership / IMG Committee
Purpose: To develop strategic plans for the recruitment and retention of all members, including resident and student members on an ongoing basis; to review all applications for new membership, status change requests, waiver dues and transfers, and to report recommendations to the Council; To review physicians who have resigned or forfeited their membership and wish to be reinstated. To support any measures that will encourage the complete integration of IMGs into American medical practice; to represent the views and issues of concern to IMGs to the Medical Society and the IMG community.
Physician Advocacy Committee
Purpose: To represent and protect the rights, responsibilities, and interests of physicians in all modes of medical practice including those physicians in solo practice and group practice, employed physicians, academicians, hospital medical staffs, etc. This will include physician self-governance, the credentialing process, and significant involvement in medical policy development, to include, but not be limited to, Patient advocacy, quality of care, and the peer review process. To receive, review and attempt to resolve complaints, disputes or conflicts involving any physician member of a medical staff, and any structured medical entity.
Public Health Committee
Purpose: To review and respond to any request for advice, opinion or for program approval directed to the Society by any health department, municipal health committee, or public health body in Cook County, and, when directed by the President, Executive Committee, or the Council, to initiate contact with such groups on matters of concern to organized medicine.
Resolutions Reference Committee
Purpose: To receive all resolutions from the Council so referred, to hold hearings regarding those resolutions and to report to the Council with recommendations.
Senior Physicians
Subcommittee on Joint Providership (Accreditation)
Purpose: To help plan continuing medical education activities and provide detailed review of all applications received from related organizations for joint providership; to advise the full CME Committee on trends, concerns and requirements; and to assure that CMS activities and joint sponsorship programs are in full compliance with the Essentials and Standards for Commercial Support of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

This policy delineates the information collected from visitors to the web site as well as how we use and protect that information.
